The Autism Team

Who are we?

We are a team of experienced practitioners who are part of the Specialist Inclusion Support Service (SISS). The team comprises a Team co-ordinator, Lead Practitioner, Specialist Teachers and Inclusion Support Practitioners (ISPs).

What do we do?

The Autism teachers visit schools and support them to be able to meet the needs of all of their pupils who have a diagnosis of Autism. The SISS Autism Team teacher and the school SENCo decide on the priorities for the visits. It may involve work with a small number of identified pupils or it could be working with school staff on whole school strategies. The team are not able to work with all of the pupils on their caseloads on a regular basis due to the numbers of children that they have on caseload.  Visits to school tend to be fortnightly but this can be dependent upon caseload demands.

Interventions that the team can offer can include developing social skills groups, advice on specialist strategies such as Lego therapy, sensory audits and strategies, delivering peer awareness lessons, creating anxiety toolkits and relaxation groups. All of these are available depending on the assessed requirements of individual pupils and in liaison with schools. We run parent drop-in sessions to support understanding of ASD; we also have close links with SASSI (ASD support group) and other parent support groups across the Borough including Signpost Inclusion.

The team are an affiliated training hub for the Autism Education Trust (AET) and all support we offer to schools is linked to the AET framework. For further details of this programme which is supported by the Department for Education please see:
