Independent Living and Extra Care
Extra care housing is an alternative to residential care. It gives people the opportunity to live in their own home, knowing that 24 hour care and support is available on site if they need it. It’s ideal if people are frail or less able to manage on their own.
What we have done:
- Completed a scheme of 28 one-bedroomed flats supporting people with Mental Health needs.
- Completed a new extra care service for older people and people with a disability, including 33 one-bedroomed apartments for rent and 18 2-bedroomed apartments for shared ownership sale by a social landlord, adopting a revised extra care specification.
- Re-modelled two further extra care services, adopting the new specification enabling higher levels of need to be met.
- Developed a new extra care service for over 55s and a new supported living service aimed largely at adults with learning disabilities to Planning stage following extensive consultation and pre-planning work.
- Commenced an 18 month pilot ‘Shared Lives’ scheme in partnership with Coventry City Council’s Shared Lives service.
What’s happening in 2016:
- We will provide people in Solihull with a greater range of supported housing
- Re-development will continue to replace the two residential care homes we have closed and demolished in Solihull Lodge with extra care and supported living services, one for over 55s and people with disabilities, and the other aimed largely at adults with learning disabilities.
- Development of further extra care services in North Solihull and more rural areas.
- More supported living opportunities for people with disabilities who are coming out of residential colleges.
- Looking to develop more dementia residential respite provision locally.
- Looking to support the development of a ‘MyPlace’ scheme by Bromford, enabling people with long term conditions, including young people, to access supported housing.
- We will start development on two new care homes in the North and South of the borough
Case Study: Richmond Road Supported Living Development.
In the summer of 2013, Solihull Council’s Integrated Commissioning Team were approached by a new provider who were considering developing a residential care home for adults with learning disabilities, their background being in residential care for older people.
In discussion with the provider, we identified that Solihull really needed supported living rather than residential care. The provider had little experience of this model but was interested in developing a service, whilst recognising that they needed support to develop their knowledge and skills.
The Commissioning Team identified a local consultant to support and advise the provider. The provider also linked with an established supported living provider, who agreed to mentor the new organisation.
A property was bought and renovated to provide 8 one bedroom supported living flats. Separate support and housing organisations were created and registered as companies and the support organisation were granted CQC registration. Solihull Housing Benefit Team advised the provider about appropriate rent levels and Solihull Adult Social Care Team was involved in the identification and assessment of appropriate people to be considered for tenancies and support.
There were 8 large one bedroom flats for people with disabilities, of which 4 flats were accessible for people who use wheelchairs. The properties were completed in August 2014 and the first tenants moved in April 2015.
