‘You in Mind’ A mental health conference organised and run by young people for young people
19th October 2018
On October 10th 7 members of the Youth Council and OVOS, Solihull’s children in care council, hosted a conference at the Renewal Centre, Solihull to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and to raise awareness of the support available for young people.
This exciting event was an opportunity for young people, teachers and professionals from support services to share ideas and good practice. It was also a chance for everyone to identify ways that services can be improved, or developed, to give young people the support they need to manage their mental health and emotional wellbeing.
17 schools attended with 160 students taking part in the day’s activities, which started with a drama piece to introduce students to characters who were struggling with mental health issues triggered by their specific circumstances. 16 service providers attended the conference to provide students with an overview of their service and to advise how they could offer support to meet characters’ needs.
In the afternoon young people raised issues and ideas for improvements with a professional panel, comprising directors and senior staff from the council and BSMHFT. School staff also made pledges as to how they could improve support available in their school.
The event was launched by The Mayor of Solihull and included guest appearances by actress Nichola Burley, star of StreetDance 3D, who coordinated the drama and X factor star Relley C who performed her latest track. Both of these guests struggled with their own mental health and spoke about their personal journey to overcome their issues.
Thanks to Beth, Josh, Mason, Kawoon, Yaseen , Vic and Leanne and Engage staff for their hard work in organising the conference and thanks to all the students, teachers and service providers for taking part and making it a great success!
