Access to information and advice 2016/17
We are committed to making sure people have access to information and advice about care and support services in Solihull. People can access information and advice in a number of ways.
The Community Advice Hubs located at The Core and Chelmsley Wood Library bring together a partnership of local organisations. They provide high quality information, advice and support to help people find and use the services they want for their care needs.
Solihull Council commissions Age UK Solihull to run the Hubs and anyone over 18 who permanently lives in Solihull can use the service.
In 2016/17 the Hubs supported 7,825 people to find solutions to their problems. 8,658 referrals were made to partner organisations. 100% of people using the Hubs said they would recommend the service to family and friends.

More than 23,000 people have visited the Solihull MyLife website in the last year to get advice and support to stay independent and manage care for themselves or family members.
The website was set up by the Council to provide information on a wide range of topics including staying fit and healthy, support for carers, and useful equipment. The site’s most popular pages were:
- Living at home
- The Better Living Centre
- Daytime activities
Solihull MyLife also features a Solihull Directory with details of 376 local organisations or groups that can offer support.

ACS (Adult Care and Support) First Point of Contact
ACS First Point of Contact is a dedicated team who deal with calls and other enquiries specifically relating to adult social care. They are based within the Council’s customer service contact centre.
The team are responsible for taking requests for people needing services and ensuring each request is appropriately responded to or passed to the most appropriate team. In addition, the team will receive and screen safeguarding concerns and ensure these concerns are managed appropriately.
During 2016/17 the team handled 45,523 calls.
Better Living Centre
The Better Living Centre (BLC) provides help and support to elderly adults, young disabled adults and carers. It is a place where people can test out gadgets and equipment that may help them remain independent in their own homes for longer. It features a demonstration home comprising a kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom.
In 2016/17 780 people attended the BLC for a pre-arranged appointment or assessment, and 396 people received a tour of the Demonstration Area.
Case Study – Barbara and Alfred Kinchin visited the centre in early 2017 and explained: “The Better Living Centre has been really helpful. We were advised about equipment, which since we have had installed, has made both of our lives easier and gives us peace of mind.”
Our Public Health department have also delivered a number of campaigns to provide information about various health issues.
Cancer screening – in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, we have delivered a number of campaigns across the borough to raise awareness of cancer. This has involved providing information and holding events in various locations. The programme aims to normalise conversations about cancer, reduce stigma and provide practical information and support to people recovering from cancer.
Winter Warmth – during the winter of 2016/17, 962 people were protected from the effects of cold through the Solihull Winter Warmth campaign. An additional 3,105 people identified at most risk of the effects of cold weather were also provided with information and tips on keeping warm. Solihull was recognised by National Energy Action in their Get Warm Soon publication as an excellent example of good practice, demonstrating how the Solihull Health & Wellbeing Board and Council are tackling health inequalities of living in cold homes, fuel poverty and excess winter deaths.
